For almost two years, a quiet but determined effort has been underway to bring something much-needed to our community – a place where stroke survivors, carers and families can come together, share their stories and know they are not alone.

That vision has finally become reality with the launch of Yarrawonga Mulwala Stroke Support Group, thanks to the dedication of Kellie Robilliard and Julie-Anne Clarke from the Yarrawonga Mulwala Community & Learning Centre, who have worked alongside local stroke survivors and carers to turn an idea into a community support network.

Until now, the closest stroke support group was in Albury but now monthly gatherings in Yarrawonga will provide a welcoming space where stroke survivors, carers and families can connect, share experiences and support one another.

Local stroke survivor Gil Cunningham knows only too well how dramatically life can change after experiencing multiple strokes.

“The problem with strokes is they’re not like having a heart attack,” Gil said.

“No two strokes are the same; they affect different parts of the brain, so everyone’s journey is different.

“People tend to step away when you’ve had a stroke because they don’t know how to handle it.

For many survivors, the challenges continue long after leaving the hospital.

Changes to speech, memory, mobility and confidence can make everyday life difficult, while carers often face significant adjustments as they support their loved ones.

One of the biggest challenges is isolation.

Some people withdraw from social activities because they feel misunderstood, while family and friends can sometimes be unsure how best to offer support.

Kellie Robilliard said there were many stroke survivors in the community and the new group aimed to create an environment where survivors and carers can feel understood and connected.

The group will be shaped by the people who attend, with members able to suggest topics, activities and guest speakers.

Allied health professionals and specialists will be invited to share information and practical advice.

Gil believes some of the greatest benefits will come from simply spending time with others who understand.

“We don’t always talk about strokes,” he said.

“Sometimes we just have a coffee and chat about life; that’s important too.”

He hopes the group will encourage others to take that first step.

“If someone only wants to come along for a couple of weeks just to hear what other people are feeling, then that’s okay; that’s what the group is about.”

As National Stroke Week highlights the importance of stroke awareness and the F.A.S.T. message, the launch of this local support group is a timely reminder that recovery is not only about rehabilitation, it is also about friendship, understanding and community.

Anyone who has experienced a stroke, is caring for someone who has, or would like to learn more is warmly invited to attend.

Meetings are free, and new members are always welcome.
