Victorian farmers have been reminded to review their biosecurity plans after the discovery of H5 bird flu in the state.

Victorian Farmers Federation President Ryan Milgate said farmers should review their biosecurity plans and keep an eager lookout for any unusual illness or unexplained bird deaths and report them immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

“While this detection is concerning, it’s not unexpected and the wider agriculture industry has been undertaking an enormous amount of preparation over the past few months for this very moment,” Mr Milgate said.

“Importantly, this detection is in a wild bird. There has been no spread to commercial poultry flocks or any agricultural environment at this stage, and the risk to human health remains very low.”

“We are continuing to work closely with government and industry as the response continues.”

“Good biosecurity remains our best defence against the spread of disease. We strongly encourage all livestock producers, not just poultry farmers, to review their biosecurity plans, ensure they reflect current risks, and remain alert for any sick or dead birds or unusual signs of disease on or near their property.”

A positive test in a bird was detected in the state's south-west.

Agriculture Victoria has confirmed the virus was detected in a greater crested tern found near Portland.

Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Graeme Cooke said further genetic testing was being conducted to formally confirm the result at the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness at Geelong.

‘Following weeks of enhanced readiness, we have now enacted Victoria’s State Emergency Animal Disease Response Plan. Based on international experience, this H5 variant differs from previous strains and has been known to cause large numbers of deaths in wild birds and some mammals.’

‘Our plans aim to limit impacts where possible particularly on our most threatened species, while also supporting our farmers and reducing risk to domestic and commercial poultry,“ Dr Cooke said.

‘We need Victorians to avoid contact with sick or dead wildlife, record what they see and report it.

Early reporting gives us the best chance to reduce the impacts of the disease,’ Dr Cooke said.
