The Inspector-General of Water Compliance, Troy Grant, has released the fifth Murray-Darling Basin Metering Report Card.

Released annually, the report card provides public transparency on the progress being made implementing metering and telemetry reforms by basin jurisdictions.

The 2024-25 report card found that while progress had been made with non-urban water metering, implementation gaps remained.

Reliable and accurate measurement is fundamental to effective water management, compliance and basin plan accounting.

The report card examines metering coverage, meter accuracy, telemetry and installer capacity.

This year’s report card gives additional attention to licensing and measurement of floodplain harvesting in NSW and overland flow in Queensland, where important implementation gaps remain.

“Knowing what water is taken, when, by whom and in a timely manner is fundamental to ensuring the balance between water for consumption and water for the environment is being achieved,” Mr Grant said.

The report card found that metering coverage remained high in several states, including Victoria.

It also identified an encouraging basin-wide continuation of the shift towards meters that comply with the Australian standard for non-urban water meters, a measure for meter accuracy.

However, implementation remained uneven and incomplete, with jurisdictions continuing work on meter upgrades, validation, telemetry and policy reform.
