What we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others lives for ever.

That’s the motto of local mental health and suicide prevention charity We Listen.

The regional suicide support group is getting behind the family of Mooroopna’s Pollymay Berry, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in April.

We Listen, which recently shifted its focus to mental health more broadly, is turning its annual walk for suicide prevention into a walk for mental health to help raise funds for Pollymay’s family.

The event, which will be held between noon and 4pm on Sunday, November 22 at Ferrari Park in Mooroopna, will feature market stalls, food vans, coffee vans, entertainment and face painting.

A range of mental health support services will also be there, as well as a guest speaker from mental health charity Beyond Blue.

People are encouraged to wear blue, Pollymay’s favourite colour.

We Listen founder Steve Neff will be shaving his head and beard on the day.

He said We Listen wanted to support the family, as it was all about “helping others and the community”.

The organisation had supported 800 people, he said, and had plans to expand beyond its current groups in Shepparton, Cobram, Echuca and Benalla.

It is also looking at setting up an op shop.

Mr Neff encourages the community to reach out to anyone they know who may be struggling.

“Reach out to them and ask. Don’t just say ‘are you okay’, continue to ask them,” he said.

For the group, the walk on November 22 is a chance to further raise awareness for the cause of mental health.

“Just to let people know they are not all alone,” Mr Neff said.

“We all go through tough times, sometimes people don’t know where to go for support.”
