Recent snake sightings near the Hardinge St shopping complex and the Deniliquin Swim Centre have prompted a reminder for residents to stay alert and avoid approaching reptiles.

With warmer weather increasing snake activity, wildlife experts say snakes are commonly seen basking in sunny, open areas and will usually move away if left undisturbed.

Authorities warn that most snake bites occur when people attempt to catch, move or kill a snake.

Residents who encounter a snake are advised to remain calm, keep children and pets away, and give the animal plenty of space to move on.

If a snake is inside a home, injured or unable to escape, assistance should be sought from a licensed snake handler or wildlife rescue service.

Under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, it is illegal to kill a snake and only licensed handlers can legally catch and release reptiles from commercial and residential homes and backyards.

Deniliquin is supported by a trained venomous snake handler through WIRES, ensuring safe responses to snake-related incidents.

Property owners can reduce the likelihood of attracting snakes by keeping lawns mowed, removing rubbish and garden debris, and controlling rats and mice, which are a common food source.

If you encounter a snake in the bush, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends stopping and slowly moving away.

People should never poke, handle or attempt to relocate a snake themselves.

Contact WIRES on its 24-hour rescue line, 1300 094 737, if you need assistance removing a snake or reptile.

The NSW Government’s register of reptile handlers also includes two contacts at Moama - Jade Walsh on 0417 361 342 and Naomi Walsh on 0428 626 644.

If you are bitten by a snake, call 000 immediately. Giving a description of the snake can help medical staff.
