Conargo Public School is continuing its environmental stewardship program on the Billabong Creek.

At the end of term two, the Year 3-6 class participated in the Nursery to Nature initiative - a wetland planting for restoration afternoon.

The opportunity is offered as part of the school’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Programs, which provide students with opportunities for extension across all subjects.

Students and members of the community were invited to hear from industry specialists, and to explore the current invertebrate populations in the creek system.

Staff and students noticed a huge growth compared to the last time they checked at the start of winter. This is a natural occurrence due to seasonal conditions.

The school then planted various plant species along the creek’s edge, with help from teachers, past students and other community members.

This will provide animal habitat and, along with carp eradication and restocking, aims to improve water quality and boost fish populations.

Principal Kylie Charlton said students learned that rushes and sedges are important aquatic and riverbank plants that have spreading surface roots that bind soil and reduce erosion.

“Opportunities like this give students a deeper understanding of caring for the environment and demonstrates the effort that is involved in boosting the native fish populations for local anglers,” she said.

“A huge thank you to Karen from the Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council, consultants John Conallin, Dan Hutton and Roseanne Farrant, and all the community members involved.

“It was wonderful to see past Conargo student Cyrus Buckley come out to assist.

“Also a big thank you to Transgrid for sponsoring the event, and represented by Paul McFadyen on the day.”
