On behalf of the Anglican Parish of Benalla, we wish to express our profound sadness at the recent incident involving Helen Haines, and to offer our heartfelt prayers for her healing and recovery, and for strength and comfort for her family and loved ones.

We are deeply grateful to the courageous bystanders who intervened, the first responders who came to Helen’s aid, and the dedicated medical professionals who continue to care for her. Their courage, compassion and selflessness in such difficult circumstances remind us of the very best of our shared humanity.

We know that many across our community have been deeply saddened and shaken by what has happened, particularly Helen’s friends, colleagues, staff, and those who witnessed or responded to the incident. We recognise that everyone will be affected differently, and that feelings of sadness, shock and uncertainty may remain for some time. Our hope is that all those affected find the understanding, care and support they need in the days and weeks ahead.

In difficult moments, we are reminded of how much we depend upon one another, and how important it is to respond with kindness, patience and compassion. Whatever our differences, we share a responsibility to care for our neighbours, to offer support where it is needed, and to ensure that no-one feels they must carry their burdens alone.

Helen and all those affected continue to be remembered in the prayers of our parish, with special intercessions offered at our regular services. We also wish to remind the wider community that Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Benalla is open every day, welcoming anyone who may be seeking a quiet place for prayer, reflection or simply a moment of peace.

For those who would appreciate someone to talk to, our parish priest, Ven. Mel Clark, is also available for a private conversation, pastoral care or prayer.

As Helen continues her recovery, we pray that she and those closest to her may draw strength from the care and affection of the community around them. And as we move through these difficult days together, may we continue to show one another the gentleness, understanding and love that are so often needed most when words alone are not enough.

With prayers and every blessing,

— The Anglican Parish of Benalla
