On Monday, July 27, millions of mobile devices across Australia will blare a 10-second emergency siren.

However, local outreach organisations are warning the alert could expose a vital lifeline for domestic violence survivors relying on a safe phone.

At 2pm AEST, state and federal emergency services will launch a nationwide test of AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system.

Designed to send critical warnings during natural disasters ‒ such as bushfires, floods and cyclones ‒ as well as biosecurity, health and security threats, the system uses cell broadcast technology to reach every mobile phone in range of a cell tower.

However, because these messages are classified as Critical Alerts, they override standard phone settings, ringing out even if a device is switched to ‘silent’ or 'do not disturb' modes.

This feature could pose a direct risk to individuals who keep hidden phones to seek help, plan an escape, or stay connected with loved ones safely.

Local support organisations are urging anyone hiding a device for personal safety to take precautions well before the test begins.

The national test is part of final trials ahead of AusAlert’s official system rollout in October.

When the alert triggers on Monday, compatible mobile devices will vibrate, sound a 10-second siren-like alarm, and display a visual pop-up reading ‘Critical AusAlert’ with test details.

Because this is a test, you do not need to take any action or contact emergency services whether you receive the alert or not.

Older devices or phones with outdated software may not receive the broadcast.

Specific resources have been made available for all Australians, including people living with disability, older Australians, young people, First Nations people and people from diverse backgrounds.
