While the annual Seymour Fun Day is all about excitement and joy, it also serves as a pressing reminder of what the town could be.

The event, now in its third year, is hosted by a hopeful committee of local dreamers.

A dedicated physical space for fun is what member Michael Easton said the committee was working towards.

“For Seymour to have a permanent fun centre in town will create a space for young people and families to help them belong and grow physically, socially and spiritually,” he said.

“It will be a safe, fun space for families to enjoy together, improving our mental and physical health.

“For the committee, it would be a great achievement to create a community-owned and operated not-for-profit. It will be a reward for years of dreaming and working towards this goal.”

The committee is supported by Scripture Union Australia, a Christian organisation that aids churches and communities in providing positive outcomes for local children and their families, while spreading religious ideology.

The group’s most significant feat has, so far, been its facilitation of the much-loved Seymour Fun Day, held each year on the AFL Grand Final public holiday.

Not only does the event provide a thrilling time for local families, it also brings the Seymour Fun Centre committee closer to achieving its dream.

“The fun days are a step towards this greater goal by testing the sorts of activities that people are interested in, testing financial viability of such a centre and building connections within the community and demonstrating our commitment,” Mr Easton said.

“By having a track record of fun day events, we also have data that we can use to help applications for funding for an ongoing fun centre.”

This year’s event, to take place on Friday, September 26 at the Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre, will feature activities such as rock climbing, drone flying, laser tag, a jumping castle, giant games and face painting.

Local groups including the CFA, Central Church, the Seymour Football Netball Club and the Lions Club are set to be involved to help facilitate the event.

With a barbecue, waffle and ice-cream van, Asian street food, and the aquatic centre kiosk, families, who are invited to wear their footy team’s colours, will have lots to choose from in terms of delicious food.

Tickets are $25 for general admission, and $10 for parents or supervisors. The festivities are scheduled to run from 10am to 2pm.

“The Seymour Fun Day is important for locals because it provides a family-friendly activity during school holidays right here in Seymour,” Mr Easton said.

“It is about local people making a positive contribution for locals.

“Invite your friends and come along for a great time, knowing that with significant support, we are one step closer to a permanent fun centre becoming a reality.”
