The Corowa Cougars delivered a statement performance at Baranduda Recreation Reserve on Sunday, with both teams securing wins over Wodonga Wombats to bounce back from their previous round’s mixed results.

Men’s Rugby League

The men’s side showcased their potential with a commanding 52-8 victory that highlighted the depth within the squad.

The return of team Captain Brenden Johnson from shoulder injury provided a significant boost to the team, with Johnson slotting eight of nine conversions throughout the contest and leading his team around the park in halfback.

Karvan Silva continued his consistent form at lock, with his efforts rewarded with his first try for the Cougars.

New recruit Joshua Kemp made an immediate impact in his first appearance in Cougars colours, crossing for two tries.

The pair working in tandem, passing back and forth to avoid the desperate cover defence to finish with a try.

Leesa Hawking once again demonstrated her individual brilliance, this time collecting the ball directly from a kick-off.

Hawking used her pace and vision to carve through the Wombats line, racing 60 metres untouched to cross for another memorable try.

The defensive effort was equally impressive, with the team working cohesively across the park to deny Wodonga any scoring opportunities.

The commitment from every player to be involved in both attack and defence reflected the strong team culture that has been building throughout the season.

Eboni Clifton was deservedly awarded Players’ Player honours, Kenz Winnell earned the runner-up position, while Camryn Andracchio received the Coaches Award and Georgia Farrington was recognised with the Old Boys award.

The victories see both teams in strong positions on their respective ladders, with the men’s side sitting second behind undefeated Tumbarumba Greens, while the women sit second-place behind Shepparton Eagles in what is shaping as a competitive race for the minor premiership.

Next Sunday, the Cougars return to home soil at Corowa Aerodrome to face Wolfpack, with the women’s league tag team kicking off at 12:15pm followed by the men’s rugby league contest at 3:15pm.
