The recent Mother’s Union Lady Day celebration has been ruled a success.

On Tuesday, March 25, the Central Goulburn branch members of the Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta Mother’s Union, which covers three other regional branches, hosted the Lady Day at St John’s in Nagambie.

Visitors attended from churches across the region, including from Shepparton, Seymour, Nagambie and Rushworth, with 20 total attendees joining in to celebrate.

Also in attendance was Mother’s Union representative Robyn Aulman from Rutherglen, accompanied by her support dog Lucy.

Morning tea was followed by the Eucharist service led by Rev Andre Du Plooy, locum priest for the Central Goulburn Parish.

Patty Du Plooy, Wendy McCullough and Marlene Brew gave Bible readings, and hymns resounded off the church walls.

Rev Du Plooy preached the sermon, and spoke meaningfully about the connections of Lady Day.

The Mother’s Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner to support young mothers and families.

The union is now an international organisation with around one million members.

“In 60 countries, members carry out the work of support to family life,” Diane Grant of the Diocese of Wangaratta Mother’s Union said.

“Mother’s Union is committed to social justice and the empowerment of women.

“Members have a common desire to improve their own family life and that of others through faith in Christ, prayer and practical action.”

126 years ago, Mother’s Unions across the world adopted March 25 as Lady Day, an annual day for prayer, intersection and thanks-giving.

On the day, following the intersections read by Ms Grant and Holy Communion, Rev Du Plooy presented a Mother’s Union long service badge and certificate to Muriel Andrea for her 66 years of service, Dawn Elliot and Marlene Brew for 20 years service, and Ms Grant for 47 years.

Lunch was enjoyed at the Nagambie Rowing Club, and Mother’s Union member Marlene Brew celebrated her birthday with a cake and song.

A small raffle was held, with Deane Page from Nagambie winning first prize, and Robyn Aulman from Rutherglen second.

Funds raised will go towards the Overseas and Outreach Mother’s Union Women’s Literacy projects in the Solomon Islands.
