Lions Skin Cancer Van

The Lions Club is privileged to be part of an outstanding initiative: the V6 Skin Cancer Van project. This project provides the public with access to a complimentary clinic that emphasizes the critical importance of skin cancer screenings for all Australians.

The Yarrawonga Lions Club recently hosted a successful two-day skin cancer check in Yarrawonga.

The club booked 122 appointments in 12 hours and received more inquiries than they could accommodate, scheduling 153 people by the end of the weekend.

About 38 per cent were referred for further assessment, and 79 clients had never been screened before. This was a valuable opportunity for health monitoring, and Lions are proud to provide this service.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and Lions Clubs in Victoria and Southern NSW are doing something practical about reducing that level and its impact on families.

Incorporated charity The Lions V Districts Cancer Foundation, has put the Skin Check and Awareness Unit on the road, following excellent financial support from Lions Clubs and generous public and private supporters.

Following the skin check, visitors are issued with a referral to their GP if there are any suspect spots or lesions.

The unit is not a medical clinic, so diagnosis or treatment requirements are not discussed – it simply provides the skin check and alerts the visitor to skin lesions that require further checking and attention: a great first step in ensuring urgent needs are addressed.

Yarrawonga Lions would like to express their sincere appreciation to Tony and Josie, owners of The Lake View Motel and Shaun from the Yarrawonga Holiday Park, for providing accommodation assistance.

Yarrawonga Lions also extend gratitude to Lauren and Dean from Mulwala Bakery for supplying morning and afternoon tea, as well as lunch for all volunteers over the two days.

Additionally, the club thanks IGA for graciously providing space in their carpark for the van.

Skin cancer check unit to visit Tungamah

The Lions Club of Tungamah and District is proud to announce that the Skin Check van will be visiting Tungamah on March 29 and 30 at Middleton Street.

The van will provide a free skin checking service to local people and will be operated by fully trained, certificated and professionally supervised volunteers.

The unit will also be a valuable resource for local people to access not only the skin check, but valuable and timely information about skin care and self-checking techniques.

Early detection of skin lesions potentially saves lives, so this visit will be a timely support and reminder to local people of the need to take care of their skin.

The airconditioned van has three fully equipped checking rooms and an entry foyer, as well as a disabled lift and entry at the rear.
