Round two in Murray Playing Area pennant bowls saw a few Cobram sides come back to earth with a bang, last Saturday.

On a day that offered no excuses weather wise, Cobram Division 1 travelled to Wunghnu.

Wunghnu were smarting from a loss the week prior and Cobram felt the retribution with losses on all rinks. Greg Dunn’s side went down 19-25 to Josh Cartwright. Ray Parks’ side felt the pain losing 18-26 against David Cartwright. John Dixon’s rink went down 15-24 to Barry Cosgrove. Overall Cobram 52 to Wunghnu 75.

Cobram will have to lick their wounds and recover to take on an undefeated Strathmerton next week.

The Division 2 side faired better when playing at home against Tocumwal.

Cobram’s Haydn Smith’s rink played Tocumwal’s Geoff Mears in a game where the scores did not indicate the tightness of the contest. Smith 16 to Mears 24. Cobram’s Ron Dougherty, with Koby Madgwick (L), Paul McKay (2) and Kerry Baldacchino (3) had an arm wrestle all day with Toc’s Doug Pocknee. Dougherty and his side took the points 18-16.

The Cobram rink of Joy Mynard (L), Brian Doyle (2), John Anders (3) and skipped by Colin McDonald were in a tight tussle early against Tocumwal’s Bob Bowman.

With the score at 11-10 on the 13th end in favour of McDonald, Cobram scored 22 shots to five over the final eight ends. When the dust settled it was McDonald 33 to Bowman 15. Overall Cobram 67 shots to Tocumwal 55 shots.

In Division 3, Cobram made the journey to Jerilderie to do battle with Jerilderie’s number one side.

Cobram’s Marj McDonald met Jerilderie’s Mark Baldwin and were tied 18 apiece after 17 ends but weren’t able to go on with it, going down 18-24. The Cobram rink skipped by Carol Doherty nipped at the heels of Jerilderie’s Terry Chaplin, losing 18-22.

Cobram’s Trevor Wood and his side were in a world of pain, going down 13-34 to Jerilderie’s John Bryce. Overall, Cobram 54 to Jerilderie 80.

Cobram Division 4 were at home to a feisty Numurkah outfit.

The Cobram rink skipped by Brian Bacon went down by 3 shots (17-20) to Numurkah’s William Werner. But the Cobram rink of Steve Paganoni (L), Tracey Emery (2), Linda Gallyot (3) and skipped by Alan Temple did enough to snatch the rink points and the match points, winning 23-19.

Overall, Cobram 40 shots, 12 points to Numurkah 39 shots, 2 points.

Cobram Division 5 were also at home. They took on rivals, Barooga in what was a close contest for most of the day.

Carol Mathers skipped a Cobram side that was up against Carol Cox and her Barooga colleagues. With the scores locked 11-all after 15 ends Cobram fell away and were overtaken on the run to 21 ends. When the players shook hands, it was Mathers 14 to Cox 20.

In the other Division 5 encounter it was Ian Bray from Cobram opposing Barooga’s Dianne Nye.

Bray and his charges held sway early and were clear leaders after 13 ends with the score 15-6. By the 18th end, Nye and her compatriots had levelled the score at 16 all.

Barooga maintained their momentum to the wire and took the points, Bray 17 to Nye 20. Overall, Cobram 31 to Barooga 40.

On Sunday the Murray Playing Area Men’s State Fours semi finals were conducted in the morning at Berrigan.

The Cobram team skipped by Ron Dougherty, with Haydn Smith, David Bewley and Phill O’Dwyer went down to a composite team of Dane Gade from Numurkah Golf and Berrigan’s Paul Glanville, Matt Hansen and Jason Milich, 10-19.

In the other semi-final Finley triumphed over Wunghnu. In the men’s final played in the afternoon, Gade and the Berrigan boys were too strong for Finley, winning 13-11.

In the Murray Playing Area Women’s State Fours final, played at Berrigan on Sunday afternoon, it was Cobram versus Tocumwal. Cobram was ably skipped by Marj McDonald with Kerry Baldacchino as third, Rebecca Dungan playing second and Christine Dunne as lead.

The Tocumwal team consisted of Leigh Hansen (S), Judy Harvie (3), Cheryl Mears (2) and Effie Eaton (L).

In an extremely tight contest, it was Cobram who were crowned Ladies State Fours Champions for the Murray Playing Area, winning 14 to 13. Well done ladies.
