The finals fixture of the AWFA is nearing, with Cobram Roar consolidating its ladder standings after a mix bag of results over the weekend.

Cobram took to the field on Sunday, July 13 for round 16 of the AWFA, hosting the Booomers at Apex Park on a bright winter’s day.

The Boomers’ Alarna Parascos proved deadly for the home side, weaving through the Roar backline and burying the ball in the back of the net on four occasions before half-time, despite some heroic saves by Cobram keeper Judith Cakebread.

As the clock ticked down to the break, Cobram searched in vain for a consolation goal.

It didn’t come easily for the Roar, who gave away a further two goals to the Boomers in the second half when Claire Mahoney extended the margin to six goals in the 53rd minute.

But a goal did arrive eventually for Cobram, finding the bottom corner off the instep of Roar skipper Alyssa Iannucci in the dying stages of the second half.

The strike from 18 yards out was some solace for the skipper, who controlled the play through the midfield and almost found the back of the net on repeat occasions throughout the fixture.

The final score settled on 1-6 to the Boomers, leaving Cobram’s division one women at seventh on the ladder.

With the premier men’s side out for a bye and due to face Myrtleford Savoy at Wangaratta under lights on Wednesday, July 16, the division two men took the field to wrangle it out with their Boomers counterparts.

By the time Cobram’s Jackson Temarkon had buried the ball in the side-netting from a wonder-strike 25 yards out, a cross-breeze had picked up and played havoc with air balls.

The Boomers fought to find something in a response, and the physical contest saw tensions flare when Cobram’s Charley Ibbotson was sent off with a red card in the 58th minute.

But the Roar pressure and link-up proved too strong, with Henry Suimae finding the back of the Boomers’ net twice, securing victory for his team as Cobram went on to win, 3-0.

Meanwhile, the over-35 men found themselves in hot water after goals from Daniel Steinhauser and Adam Griffith delivered victory to the Boomers, 0-2.

Cobram travels to Aloysius Park next week to face off against first-place Albury Hotspurs.
