The women’s league tag team produced one of the greatest matches in Murray Cup history, falling to undefeated Shepparton Eagles 22-18 in a thirteen-minute golden point, while the men secured a hard-fought 22-20 victory over Wangaratta Knights to maintain their perfect home record against their rivals.

Women’s League Tag

The women’s league tag side produced what will be remembered as one of the greatest matches in Murray Cup history, falling agonisingly short to the undefeated Shepparton Eagles 22-18 in the 13th minute of golden point after an epic encounter.

Men’s Rugby League

The men’s side delivered a gritty 22-20 victory over Wangaratta Knights, maintaining their perfect record of never having been defeated by the Knights men on Cougar home soil while securing their place in the preliminary finals.

The men’s team rallied together magnificently to face a determined Wangaratta Knights side, with both teams fully aware that only one opportunity existed to progress to the preliminary finals alongside their women’s team counterparts.

The match was a testament to the competitive balance within the competition, with both sides creating and defending scoring opportunities throughout a contest that remained in doubt until the final whistle.

The quality of play and commitment from both teams provided excellent entertainment for the home crowd.

Billy Nicholls earned Players’ Player honours for his outstanding agility across the field, playing eyes-up football that created space for both himself and his teammates.

His work rate in defense complemented his attacking contributions perfectly, a complete performance that got the wrap of his teammates.

Uluak Taufa was named runner-up for his powerful showing in the second row. His consistency and physicality were crucial factors in the team’s ability to control the contest when it mattered most.
